Species of the Week- Garlic Mustard

Garlic Mustard, also known as Alliaria petiolata, can be found in the herbaceous layer of Charles river wetlands, the Sachar Woods, and in just about every nook and cranny around campus. This invasive plant spreads quickly through wind spread seeds and sprouts early in the spring. Garlic mustard is also allelopathic, meaning it excretes chemicals that limit the growth of other species of plant...

Update

Hey y'all, I made this post to inform everyone of our spring 24 goals. I know I have been rather inactive lately, but I assure you that will change. My apologies for not continuing the ob of the week series, I was extremely busy and it slipped my mind. Starting in March we will start the observation of the month series, because week wasn't really explainable. We will host the annual "Race for the Summer Tanager". There will also be a focus on herps come spring that I hope would be r...

False charged by pair of Coyotes in Everglades National Park - Jan 2024

On a gorgeous late January South Florida morning with feels like temperatures somewhere in the high 50s to low 60s, I decided to take advantage of the cool weather and windy conditions to explore typically mosquito infested tropical hardwood hammocks for rare orchids in the Long Pine Key area of Everglades National Park.
I enjoyed a cold and peaceful sunrise beside the water and began a solo hike through one of my favorite hammocks at around 7:15am, as the sun just barely poked over ...

Dexter Park, February 7, 2024

It seems the new year is moving so rapidly I can't believe we're almost mid-way through February. Last week we had epic rains here in Southern California (and much of the state as well). While this much rain may not be cause for concern in many other parts of the country, here we suffer from floods and mudslides when we get a lot of rain all at once. So it really does impact the terrain as well as people.

Once the rain subsided, I decided to head over to a place called Dexter Par...

Many lichens are still mysteries to science

From the Fynbos to the Kalahari, our exploration so far has led us to one inescapable conclusion about lichens – the closer you look, the more you find. In fact, in our recent research in the Western Cape and the Kalahari, we found two new genera and, we believe, several new species.

Obedas proboscideus Jacobi, 1910

Obedas proboscideus is a small, unusual planthopper with coriaceous wings and a uniquely shaped head. The genus was originally described from East Africa; observations of this species near Pretoria either represent a range expansion or a second, undescribed member of the genus. It appears to be very rare.

Obedas is closely related to the genera Durium and  Bananello...

t is an exceptionally warm month of February. Thanks to the southerly winds ("Föhn"), it will be up to 20°C in the Rhine Valley today! Small insects, a snail and various mosses thrive in the forest. Thanks a lot for your suggestions for identification.!
